The Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis and the Diversity of Bacteria on the Human Body

چکیده
The intermediate disturbance hypothesis predicts that the highest diversity will occur at levels of moderate disturbance. We measured the species diversity, abundance, and species diversity of bacteria on the human body in relation to disturbance by washing. Bacteria were sampled from three surfaces on the human body with varying disturbances, counted, and classified into morphospecies. The site with intermediate disturbance had the highest species richness and species diversity. While these results match the prediction of the intermediate disturbance hypothesis, diversity of bacteria may have also been influenced by physical and behavioral

Diversity-disturbance relationships: frequency and intensity interact.
An influential ecological theory, the intermediate disturbance hypothesis (IDH), predicts that intermediate levels of disturbance will maximize species diversity. Empirical studies, however, have described a wide variety of diversity-disturbance relationships (DDRs). Using experimental populations of microbes, we show that the form of the DDR depends on an interaction between disturbance freque...
متن کاملThe effect of waterway distance on species diversity and Plant Functional Groups in mountainous rangelands of Anbaran Chai, Ardabil
The plant communities locating at the margins of the waterways play a vital role in the ecological processes and ecosystem services in the semi-arid mountainous regions. In this study, variations of plant diversity and composition at different distances from the waterway and its slope aspects were investigated. For this purpose, 15 sub-basins with a variety of area and length of waterway, in bo...
متن کاملScaling Disturbance Instead of Richness to Better Understand Anthropogenic Impacts on Biodiversity
A primary impediment to understanding how species diversity and anthropogenic disturbance are related is that both diversity and disturbance can depend on the scales at which they are sampled. While the scale dependence of diversity estimation has received substantial attention, the scale dependence of disturbance estimation has been essentially overlooked. Here, we break from conventional exam...
متن کاملThe intermediate disturbance hypothesis should be abandoned.
A leading idea about how disturbances and other environmental fluctuations affect species diversity is the intermediate disturbance hypothesis (IDH). The IDH states that diversity of competing species is, or should be expected to be, maximized at intermediate frequencies and/or intensities of disturbance or environmental change. I argue that the IDH has been refuted on both empirical and theore...
متن کاملRelationships between Species Diversity and Biomass in Mountainous Habitats in Zagros Rangeland (Case Study: Baneh, Kurdistan, Iran)
Species diversity, richness and biomasses (aboveground biomass) and their relationships are the key variables of ecosystems. This study was conducted to determine the relationship of Species Diversity (SD) and Species Richness (SR) with Above-Ground Biomass (AGB) at a local scale at 5 different habitats (shrubland, forbland, grassland, shrub-forbland and forb-shrubland) in Zagros mountains in w...
